The story of Merry Carole Powers? Well, it all started on a cold December day back in ….

Wait. That seems a bit too far back to begin for our purposes. Let’s fast forward to sixth grade. The St. Clement school cafeteria. Approximately 5:30 pm. It’s just me, a stack of paper and an eight-pack of Crayola markers. Until George the janitor taps me on the shoulder and tells me I have to go home because it’s time for him to lock up the school.

Huh? Lock up the school? But I just sat down - it’s only three o’clock.

Or so I thought.

Two and a half hours had passed in the blink of an eye. I had gotten so caught up, sucked into, and all-around enthralled by my task at hand, that time had literally disappeared.

What exactly was that enthralling task, you ask? Well, I had been asked by a group of boys to create custom-made Valentine’s cards for their girlfriends. (They actually paid me a buck a card.) I don’t remember how the whole transactioning came about, and I guess it really doesn’t matter. But here’s what does:

When inventing those silly cards, I dropped through the magical rabbit hole into a whole new world. I was writing. Creating. Playing with words and ideas and having a blast doing it.

And from that moment on, I was hooked. My creative force became my guiding force. Throughout high school, I took every creative writing class offered. In college, I tested out of all language and math classes so that I could focus as much of my studies as possible on writing. I received my first degree in journalism from a nationally ranked program. Then went on to further studies for commercial creative writing and ended up embarking on a career in ADVERTISING. In no time at all, I was writing television spots, print ads, websites, radio spots and social media content for massive, mega global brands.

I traveled around the world on productions. Met celebrities. Shot with famous film and video directors. Wined and dined with big name producers, casting agents and choreographers. I also, on a fun side note, worked with elite Hollywood makeup artists and film crews and got all kinds of juicy insider scoop that would put People Magazine to shame. I was young. Unaware. And having a ball.

But there was a wake up call on the horizon. And it came in the form of death.

Pretty early on in my career, my mother passed away. The depth of that pain took me so far inside myself, I discovered levels to living I never knew were there. The hole I fell into in the wake of her loss was incredibly deep and incredibly dark, and it required me to dig equally deep into my creative abilities to create a way back into the light of joy.

And something really significant unfolded in that process. My creativity and my spirituality merged. I used my writing skills to release my pain. From there, I found more and more creative ways to heal. These included things our culture is only now beginning to accept. Meditation, energy healings, angels, fairies, past life regressions, Akashic journaling, and a bunch more. These all lead me to create my own meditations, my own journaling techniques, my own methods of clearing blocks and hyper activating the creative force inside me.

And in doing so, that force took me on a quantum leap. I was now creating off the page as well. Using all these tools to purposefully invent a life filled with new characters, more interesting plots and happier endings. It was the beginning of what I call Creative Living.

It changed me. It changed me as a writer. It changed me as a marketer. It changed me as a person.

As a writer, it was no longer enough to just share other people’s messages with the world (which is what advertising does.) I now wanted to share my own messages as well. It led me to create SCREENPLAYS, BOOKS and BLOGS. And writing from my heart connected me to the world in a new, more meaningful way.

Which, in turn changed me as a marketer. Since I was now relating to people in a more personal way, I came to know the public better. I saw how people were changing and the kinds of messages and marketing they were responding to.

And these emerging trends and mindsets were vastly different than they had been in the past. I knew early on that the world of marketing was in for a wake up call. And I decided I wanted to be the kind of marketer who created and stewarded brands the world could trust. Brands that are authentic and as interested in making a difference as they are in making money.

And this lead me to create Double Bottom Line Branding. A process that creates just those kinds of brands and ensures that they not only grow, but thrive. These are the brands people are looking to buy from. These are the brands people are looking to work for. These are the brands people are looking to invest in. These are the brands that are changing our world. Creating more meaning, more positive impact and more personal freedom through professional success are not just the way of the future. They are the here and now. And I cannot tell you how happy and deeply, deeply honored I am to be a part of creating that world.

My journey is far from over, and I’m glad. Because I now know
why I’m making the trip. I am born to create meaning and authenticity in this world. For myself. For businesses.
For each and every one of you.
